Your child’s safety is our highest priority. Eco Lab operates with low staff-to-student ratios and experienced staff who are trained in outdoor education and risk awareness. Our supervision structure includes: - trained outdoor staff present at all times - structured supervision throughout the day and night - children organised into small, age-appropriate groups - staff sleeping in a nearby tent to supervise overnight - clear safety procedures for outdoor activities and movement around the farm We aim to provide a carefully supervised environment where children feel safe, supported, and appropriately challenged.

Hokkaido Home Farm is a rich natural environment. In addition to the farm animals that live on the property including horses, dogs, and cats,  a variety of local wildlife is often observed around the farm. Sightings have included: Ezo deers, Ezo squirrels, Hokkaido red foxes, Ezo flying squirrels, woodpeckers, pheasants and other bird species. These encounters are part of what makes Eco Lab such a special learning environment. At the same time, the farm itself is a managed agricultural landscape and is not located adjacent to national forest or river corridors, which are the typical habitats where bears are more commonly present. As a result, bear encounters in the immediate area are considered very unlikely. Our staff receive training on outdoor awareness and wildlife safety before each programme. Children are also guided in how to behave respectfully and safely in natural environments. Learning how to recognise potential risks in nature and how to respond to them responsibly is considered an important part of the Eco Lab experience.

Eco Lab takes place on Hokkaido Home Farm, a managed educational farm. Compared with completely wild environments, the setting is organised and supervised, which helps keep risks limited and manageable. However, as with any outdoor environment, some minor risks are naturally part of the experience. These may include: - insect bites - small cuts or scrapes - uneven ground when walking in fields or forest areas These are typical parts of outdoor exploration and learning. To ensure safety, we maintain clear procedures including: - trained staff with outdoor risk awareness - first-aid trained team members on site - careful supervision during all activities established safeguarding and safety protocols Our goal is to allow children to experience nature confidently while maintaining a well-managed and supportive environment.

Eco Lab takes place in a natural outdoor environment where insects and animals are present. If your child has insect or animal allergies, please contact us before registering so we can discuss whether the programme is suitable and what precautions may be needed. We also aim to accommodate food allergies wherever possible, but families should inform us in advance so appropriate arrangements can be discussed. Full medical and allergy information will be collected in the Registration Form.

For minor issues such as small cuts, insect bites, or mild illness, staff will provide appropriate care and monitor the situation carefully. If medical attention at a clinic or hospital is required, we will make every effort to contact parents in advance to discuss the situation. However, if: - parents cannot be reached - or immediate medical attention is required  staff will prioritise the child’s wellbeing and seek medical care without delay. Medical support nearby includes: - a hospital with internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, and dermatology services located approximately 8 minutes by car  - an AED available on site - at least one staff member trained in first aid and emergency response is present on site at all times Full medical information and emergency contacts are collected from parents prior to the programme.

Homesickness is a normal experience for some children when they spend time away from home for the first time. Our staff are experienced in supporting children through these moments with patience and care. In many cases, homesickness passes quickly once children become engaged in activities and build connections with the group. Staff will support children by offering reassurance, keeping them involved in the programme, and helping them feel comfortable within the group. If a child becomes significantly distressed and is unable to settle, we will contact parents to discuss the best course of action together. Our goal is always to support children in building confidence while ensuring their wellbeing.
